Popcorn’s 2nd half comeback brings them 2nd title in 2013

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2013---The long awaited ABL Super Bowl between Getcha Popcorn Ready and Wilfork on the First Date took the main stage at JFK Stadium in Hoboken, NJ.  The wait was well worth it, with championship-caliber performances from both teams on the field.

The snow on the field seemed to have no impact on the players, except for bringing back their childhood memories of how much fun playing football in the snow was back in the day. In this last game of the Fall Season, Getcha Popcorn Ready defeated Wilfork on the First Date 19 to 12 in what players were calling the Ice Bowl.

Wilfork’s first two drives of the game were masterfully executed, resulting in two touchdown scores.  They took a lot of time off the clock keeping Getcha Popcorn’s best player off the field while putting up points on the board.  The outcome on both drives resulted in quarterback Scott Vladyka connecting with Carl Smith in the end zone to take a 12 to nothing lead.

Wilfork defenseman Sean Morris didn’t make life easy for Popcorn’s quarterback Lou VigliottiSean had 3 sacks on the game which was half of the amount Lou had all season long.  Sean looked like he was going to get his 4th  sack of the night but Lou did a great job evading Sean while making a perfect pass on the run to Chase Nadell to put his team in the red zone.  Getcha’s wide receiver Christian Vercollone finished the drive running an excellent route to get his 1st touchdown reception of the night making the score 12 to 7.

Getcha Popcorn Ready finished the 1st half down, but momentum was in their favor.  Wilfork had started the game scoring on their first two drives but hadn't heard from their offense since.  Getcha Popcorn Ready’s defense settled down and figured out their opponent’s offensive schemes putting the pressure on. Popcorn’s Mike Miller started the defensive spark, knocking a ball back to the quarterback and sacking him.  The very next play defenseman Nick Campbell made a critical interception when his team was backed up in his own red zone.

The defending champions got burned earlier by the lightning fast Carl Smith, catching a bomb pass on a 3rd and long.  "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.”  Getcha Popcorn’s corners Scott Vanaski and Bodus Newsome would not let that happen again.  They both did an exceptional job shutting down any deep threats.  Bodus took away any opportunity away by knocking down any passes thrown his way.

It was 4th and goal with 2 minutes and 10 seconds left in the game.  Getcha Popcorn was down 12 to 7 and their season came down to one more snap.  There are great players that would fold under pressure.  These are the types of situations that make great players Hall of Fame players.  Getcha Popcorn’s quarterback Lou Vigliotti demonstrated why he has been ABL’s MVP for the past few seasons.  Lou placed the ball perfectly for Christian Vercollone to take their first and final lead of the game.

Getcha Popcorn Ready made a strong statement in 2013 winning both the Summer and Fall Championships. In the past two seasons, they have a dominant 19 and 1 record, setting the bar in the competitive division making anything less than winning a championship a failure.  Which team is going to step up their game and dethrone this team?  The upcoming Winter season will separate the players from the posers.  In the meantime, ABL wants to thank and congratulate everyone for a very entertaining season.
