Both Mission 50 and McSwiggans Pub in Championship

MONDAY, AUGUST 20—the first round of the coed playoffs finished up Monday night at Mama Johnson Field, setting the stage for the championship games for both the Chris Davis Division and Robinson Cano Division.

The early game of the night was between the #1 seed Mission 50 (7 – 1) vs. the #4 seed Green Rock (3 – 5) in the Chris Davis Division.  Mission 50 took advantage of Green Rock’s early mistakes in the first two innings making the game 8 to 0.  Mission 50 was very poised at the plate when choosing the right pitch, and the game looked like it was really going to get away from Green Rock when Mission 50’s 3rd baseman Kaitlin Foley smashed a line drive down the 3rd baseline.  Green Rock’s captain and 3rd baseman Keith Shaffer made a great leaping catch to get her out and to stop the bleeding from a Mission 50 rally.

Most players’ ability to play well is affected when they get hurt, especially in softball, when your hand is sprained and thumb stabilized with medical tape.  Mission 50’s Jason Gurtman ignored the doctor’s advice to sit out Monday’s playoff game and to rest his extremely swollen and bruised thumb.  He played an excellent game on both sides of the field.  He made an impressive sliding catch in right field from a shallow hit ball to get the out.  The more impressive part of Jason’s Monday night game was his hitting (4 for 4, 2 2B, 1 run, 1 RBI).

Green Rock looked like they were making a run in the top of the 8th inning when Mission 50’s outfield misjudged the power of Green Rock’s Lisa Hantman.  She hit a 3 RBI triple over the outfielder’s heads to get within 4 runs.  But in the bottom of the 8th inning, Mission 50 pulled away with a 5 run inning thanks to Adam Schreiber’s 2 run home run.  Mission Fifty defeated Green Rock 13 to 4 and will be facing the Slingers in the Chris Davis Championship Game on Monday Night.

The late game on Monday night was between the #1 seed McSwiggans Pub (7 – 1) vs. the #4 seed McMahon's (1-6-1).  The most impressive part about McSwiggans on Monday night was their defense.  They only allowed 4 hits in the game with one extra base hit.  They knew where to play in the field against each individual hitter.  When McMahon’s lefty Bryan Kohlbecker (who had 2 of McMahon’s 4 hits) was at bat, McSwiggans adjusted and played the shift in the field perfectly leaving the only McSwiggan Allie Twarowski on the left side of the field limiting the damage he was able to produce.

The shortstop Dan Clark for McSwiggan’s really stood out.  His glove seemed to be everywhere on the field.  At one point in the game his teammates were commenting how it was the Dan Clark show.

McSwiggans Pub defeated McMahon’s 12 to 0.  McSwiggans will be facing their rival Louise & Jerry’s in the Robinson Cano Division Championship.
