Balls Deep complete improbable sweep

WEEQUAHIC PARK, NEWARK, NJ -- In a historic championship weekend that found the ABL Men's Softball League playing in December for the first time in it's 15 year history, an improbable champion emerged under the dark and rainy skies at Weequahic Park turf field in Newark, NJ. Balls Deep, who entered the playoffs with a 5-9 record and hadn't played since October 21st due to an unprecedented number of rainouts, emerged victorious in a thrilling championship series.

In Game one, the # 3 seed Balls Deep (5-9) would face the # 2 seed Warriors (10-8). The weather outside was frightful, and the teams had to adjust to a short porch, but the game ended up being extremely competitive. There were no shortage of runs scored, and the game went into extra innings. Balls Deep was able to hold the Warriors scoreless in the 10th inning, and they secured a heart-pounding, upset victory 23-22!

On to the Championship Game, where Balls Deep would face the NJ Expos. Both teams would play their hearts out. The game had the same competitive juice, and with each team trading runs, it once again came down to the final innings. The Expos went ahead in the 9th inning, and things looked grim for Balls Deep. But thanks to the heroics of Will Morfe, who stroked a lead-off double, Bryce Martin, who scored the tying run, and Rudy Luciano, who won the game with a walk-off, it was Balls Deep who secured their 1st Division Championship by a score of 29-28!

Team manager Ty Horner was asked to sum up his team's performance.

"Kenny Rivera and Dave Wass hit 1.000 for the day. Will Morfe hit 1.000 in Game 2. Lots of really deep homers hit, nearly the entire team put one out, but none went as far as Cisco's (Francisco Benitez)... he wanted to make sure it was known that it went farther than the bomb hit by Wass."

The championship win capped off a season-ending 5 game winning streak for Balls Deep. An impressive feat for a team who started off the season on a 5-game losing streak. Wow!

Congratulations to BALLS DEEP - they are your Rickey Henderson Division Champs!
