Misfits top Bond St in a Glovefest

BERT WILLIS PARK -- Week 3 at the Shore was another steamer, highlighted by some red hot defensive plays and quality pitching.

The first game of the evening had the makings of classic slug fest. Whenever Bond St and the Misfits square off you can expect big hits, aggressive base running and friendly chirping. This game was no different, with Bond St jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first. The Misfits answered back with one in the bottom of the first and two more in the second.

The Misfits got two hits a piece from Chris, Eric and Tommy. Bond St got a pair from Seth and Logan. But it was defense that was the story of this one. In the third inning Misfits left fielder Chris utilized every inch of his league leading wing span and made an Odell. He robbed a sure extra base hit on a fully extended- over the shoulder catch that was the defensive web gem of the year. But not for long.

The very next inning, not to be outdone, Bond St left fielder Seth said anything you can do I can do better. He channeled his inner Superman and robbed a would-be double down the line. This was a full speed- full extension laid out, wasn’t even in your TV screen until the last second snag. This was the web gem of the year. But not for long.

In the top of the 6th with the Misfits clinging to a slim 5-3 advantage, Seth led off the inning for Bond. On the first pitch he turned on one and bashed a towering, trailing fly ball to right. It wasn’t going to clear the fence but you can tell this one was trouble. Before it reached the ground Seth was turning first and had it in gear. As he approached second, Lele picked up the ball at the base of the fence, flipped it to Riyann, Seth turned second. Riyann spun and launched a missile into the infield. Seth hit third, no hesitation, he’s going for it. First baseman Eric gets himself in perfect position to make the relay. Now Seth is halfway down the line. 20 feet from scoring. Eric fires an absolute BB to the plate. Seth slides. Carla (making her debut at catcher) straddles the plate, glove out- bang bang. Ball-glove-tag-plate. Seth is out and knows it. It was an epic 10-9-3-1 put out. It sealed the win and will go down as possibly the greatest defensive play in league history. The Misfits added a couple of insurance runs in the bottom of the inning and came out on top 7-3. They have planted themselves in the driver seat for this fall season.

In other news:

Your Mas Your Das celebrated the start of football season by throwing a 21-3 beat down on the Aaskickers. Your Mas bounced 4 ground rule doubles over the fence in this one.

Dave and Matt went 4-4 and Player of the Week Logan capped off a 5-5 6RBI doubleheader as Bond St took care of business in their second game, defeating the Backyard Brew Crew 14-5.

In the night cap, Bada Bing had to scrape a run across in the bottom of the 7th to get a tie with this seasons Cinderella story- the Clown Punchers. If the CP were a stock, everyone would be buying. With an emphasis on defense and pitching the Bozo Bullies are quickly becoming the team nobody wants to see on their upcoming schedule.

With rain in the forecast all week, let’s hope Mother Nature gives us a window Tuesday night to continue the exciting push to the playoffs.
