The Gobblers make a late bid for a comeback but fall just short against the first place Hoboken Softball Club.

The first place Hoboken Softball Club faced off with The Gobblers in a divisional matchup last Monday night.  It was their first and only matchup of the season, with Hoboken Softball Club posting a great season and The Gobblers coming on of late to recover from a rough start to their season.  This may have been another playoff preview, and it certainly did not disappoint.

Hoboken Softball Club broke open the scoring in the top of the first with some small ball.  Andrea Rommel had a productive RBI ground out for the first score of the game and Mike Mitchel legged out a fielder’s choice to produce another run.  They’d tack on 2 more in the top of the third on a Baraka Stubs 2 RBI double, extending the lead to 4-0.  The Gobblers would answer right back in the bottom of the frame to get themselves back into this one.  Tim Klein dealt the big blow with his 3-run homerun that cut the lead to 4-3 heading into the fourth.  After a scoreless fourth inning for both teams, Hoboken Softball Club would extend the lead in the fifth.  Jason Cieri answered The Gobblers with his own 3-run blast.  They’d hold serve on defense and took a 7-3 lead into the final two innings of play.  The Gobblers would shut out the Hoboken Softball Club offense the rest of the way to give the offense an opportunity.  Lindsay Ayers would hit a productive RBI groundout in the 6th to cut the lead to 7-4.  Down by 3 in the bottom of the seventh, it was all or nothing time for The Gobblers.  After a leadoff out, Alan Kopeloff would single and later score on a fielding error that also allowed Nick Stahlman to third.  Kelly Lallis continued her great game with an RBI single to score Stahlman and bring the deficit to just one run.  A Bobby Bailey single put the tying run at second and the winning run on first with just one out.  However, Hoboken Softball Club was able to clamp down on defense behind Mitchel and secure the victory by a score of 7-6.

In the loss, Kelly Lallis had an excellent game at the plate and in the field for The Gobblers.  She went 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI to complement her defensive effort.  Tim Klein led the team with 3 RBI’s on the back of his 2 for 4 performance at the plate that included a double and a homerun.  Hoboken Softball Club was led by pitcher Mike Mitchel and Jason Cieri.  Mitchel went 2 for 4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI.  Cieri led the team with 3 RBI’s on the back of that huge homerun in the fifth.  Baraka Stubbs also contributed 2 runs and 2 RBI’s on his 2 for 5 effort that included a double.

It was a tough battle between two of the more talented teams in the division.  Despite the discrepancy in their records, we knew this one was going to be good.  Hoboken Softball Club currently sits at the top of the division, just edging out Slingers.  The Gobblers are currently on the outside looking in for the playoff race but certainly have the firepower to make a run.  If these two teams meet again, it will have to be in the playoffs.
