Battle for the Crown

Four teams enter, but only two will be able to call themselves champs.

The fall season is coming to a close, with the last four standing battling for their divisional crowns.  Those four are Louise & Jerry’s and 10th & Willow of the Pudge Rodriguez Division and The Gobblers and Slingers of the Jeff Bagwell Division.  All of these teams are worthy, but only two can be crowned champs.

In an unusual double-elimination style playoffs, 10th & Willow will certainly have their work cut out for them.  They have eliminated McSwiggans Pub but, with one loss already, will need to topple the juggernaut that is Louise & Jerry’s not once, but twice in order to steal the glory.  McSwiggans Pub handed Louise & Jerry’s their only loss of the season, a 1 run upset back in Week 5, but 10th & Willow played them tough in both of their previous matchups.  10th & Willow lost by only 3 runs in each of those games, so they were certainly not out of reach.  However, scoring only 9 runs in those games, they will need the bats to wake up next weekend if they hope to knock off the defending champs.  Louise & Jerry’s stand at an impressive +41 run differential thus far in the season, and will look to make quick work of their championship opponent in game 1.

The Gobblers have been near unstoppable all season.  They too finished the regular season with just one loss, at the hands of Bayonne Bombers.  They’ve rattled off 4 straight victories and have shown the propensity to both win big and grind out close games.  That grit and resilience always shows up in the playoffs.  Slingers are no slouches though.  The seasoned vets started slow at 0-2, but went on to win 4 of their last 5 games to close out the season.  That one loss?  It was at the hands of their championship opponent this Sunday.  It was their only matchup, and they will hope for better results this time around.  The Gobblers struggled against the disappointing Hudson River CrossFit squad, who were plagued this season by injuries and close losses.  They are, however, known to be a dangerous team.  Slingers took care of business in dominant fashion against those Bayonne Bombers.  The Gobblers may have had the stronger season, but Slingers is coming off of a more impressive win.  It should be a great matchup to watch.

Good luck to all four of our remaining teams.  We look forward to some great softball to close the year out and to seeing who will come out on top!
