MVP Race Coming Down to the Wire

The Michael Jordan Division in the Winter League has been the place to watch the stars shine all season long. The trio of teams atop the division have been led by their own dynamic duos.

At 8-1, the Top Seed Goodfellas steam roll into the Playoffs. After starting the season 4-0, the 'Fellas dropped one to Balls Don't Lie. They have reeled off another 4 in a row since including avenging that loss to BDL last weekend.

Goodfellas have outscored their opponents on average of 59-46 this season. However, their real calling card has been outstanding defense, especially from the guards. They have twice as many steals per game as their opponents.

They have been led all season by the dynamic backcourt of Kevin Johnson and Tymel Jackson. KJ runs the show. The on court general is averaging 16 Points per game and 4.8 rebounds. He also neutralized his counter part at the point all season with 15 steals. When Johnson looks to facilitate the offense, he needs to look no further than partner in crime, Tymel Jackson. Jackson is one of the most complete players in the league averaging 13.8 ppg, 7.6 rebounds and over 2 steals per game. His 25 three pointers are second in the division and when he is feeling it there is no bigger threat from behind the arc. Goodfellas will take on the #4 seed who will be determined Tuesday night.

In contrast to the more conventional style of ball the Goodfellas play, you have Balls Don't Lie (7-2) the #2 seed in the MJ Division. BDL have a run and gun feel to them, reminiscent of those early 90's UNLV Runnin Rebel teams. They bring youth, speed and athleticism that can not be matched. Their bigs run the court as well as other teams guards and their shooters have endless range.

Balls Don't Lie averaged a league high 72.5 ppg for the season and only allowed 51.5. They also outrebounded opponents 31-22. Their only two loses of the season were by single digits and had three victories by more than 40 points each.

They were led by the inside/outside tandem of Simon Smith and Dylan Brossman. Smith averaged 16.3 ppg and a league high 13.3 rebounds per game. The way he runs the floor for a big man fits the style BDL want to play to a T. You can often find him cleaning the glass on one end and starting the break only to get rewarded on the other with a layup.

When SS starts that fast break, the man he usually looks for is Point Guard Dylan Brossman. An exceptional ball handler, penetrator and defender, Brossman's biggest weapon is the outside shot; leading the league in threes with 27 in only 7 games. Brossman averaged 18.4 ppg and led the team in steals with 17. If you asked the Goodfellas to be honest, the team they would not want to face again this season would be Balls Don't Lie.

The 6-3 ABB Ballers wrapped up the 3 seed and a date with Balls Don't Lie in the first round. In the 3 losses ABB suffered this season the average margin was 4 points. This is a blue collar, take your lunch to work crew that was in every game they played.

The Ballers averaged 64 points per game and allowed 53. They outrebounded opponents 29-22. In comparison to the top two teams in the division they did it more of an old fashioned way; with the two point shot. mid range jumpers and a solid post up game were the recipes for success for ABB all season and the two guys cooking it up were Robert Cheeks and Angel Sanabria.

Cheeks averaged 16.6 ppg and 10.1 rebounds to go along with a steal and block per game. Sanabria averaged 17.1 points per game and 4 rebounds.

The ABB Ballers and Balls Don't Lie have hooked up twice this season so far with each team taking one. Both games were determined by a bucket or less so Sunday night at 9pm has the potential to have the biggest Jersey City audience in that time slot since the Sopranos Finale.

As for the #4 seed and the right to play the Goodfellas in the first round, the Alligators control their own destiny. A win Tuesday vs the Monstars will punch their ticket to the post season.

Its going to be an exciting race to the Finish as March Madness sweeps over the ABL.
