Louise & Jerry's fends off McSwiggans Pub's late surge to take the championship in walk-off fashion.

When Louise & Jerry’s and McSwiggans Pub clash on the diamond, we know we are in for a treat.  Raise the stakes to a championship game?  Better buckle up.  These teams would not disappoint.

After a scoreless first, Louise & Jerry’s jumped out to an early 6-0 lead through three innings of play.  This was fueled by a 3-run homerun off the bat of John Scafidi, scoring Jude Bracken and Erika Lesher in the second, and a 2-RBI single by Rob Delfino, with Chris Lyons and Mike Martinez crossing home in the third.

McSwiggans Pub would answer back in the next inning, plating 3 much needed runs to cut the lead in half.  They would take advantage of an error and some control issues.  Brandon Doyle, Randy Williams, and Kristine Cheeka all earned RBI walks.  Dan Lyons, Sue Bara, and Julissa Muschlitz would touch home plate as a result.

The pitching and defense had picked it up for McSwiggans Pub while they waited for the offense to follow, and it did.  Now down 7-3, after Lyons scored on a Martinez single, they would again plate 3 to bring them to within just 1 run.  Dan Clark led off the inning with a double, but two outs followed.  Clark would score on a throwing error and the rally continued.  Rob Lennon drove in Williams and Cheeka followed by plating Corey Brown.

The pitching and defense again stepped up, and both teams held their opponents scoreless over the next two innings, heading into the ninth.  After a walk and a lineout, McSwiggans Pub was down to their final out.  Lucky for them, they were turning the lineup over.  Two clutch hits followed and the game was tied in the ninth.  The big blow came off the bat of pinch hitter Albeiro Hincapie, who’s single scored Muschlitz as the game-tying run.  However, McSwiggans Pub was unable to plate another run, leaving two stranded in scoring position.

With the lead blown and Louise & Jerry’s on their heels, they would come up to bat in the bottom of the ninth.  All tied up.  In the final game of the season. The championship.  Their nightmare would not last long.  Louise & Jerry’s very first batter of the ninth would answer the bell and earn his own clutch moment.  Delfino delivered again, scorching a line drive straight over the left field fence.  In dramatic fashion, Louise & Jerry’s atones for their blown lead with a walk-off, championship winning homerun.

Congratulations to both teams on excellent seasons and a hard-fought championship.  The game was a microcosm of their seasons, demonstrating the resiliency and determination of both teams.  However, this night belonged to Louise & Jerry’s, our 2016 Summer League Champions.
