Players to watch, Teams to look out for

Green Rock/ Slingers go toe to toe

There were 2 outs in the top of the 5th inning and Slinger’s Alicia Mattielo aka Ms. November opted to bat instead of having the choice to walk to 1st base.  Alicia made the right move as she hit a perfect opposite field shot in the gap for an inside the park 2 run home run.  Green Rock’s outfielder Dave Amdur limited the damage with his lightning speed in centerfield to get his team out of the inning.  The score was tied 6 to 6 in the bottom of the 7th inning with 1 out and runners on 1st and 3rd for Green Rock.  Slinger’s 3rd baseman Meghan Quinlan saved the game for the Slingers as she made an incredible sliding catch in foul territory followed by  a great throw to catcher Laura Tomana to get the runner tagging home for a game ending double play.  Green Rock and Slingers tied 6 to 6.

ABL’s Bash Brothers

Rager’s Nick Virginio and Nick Travelyn are a deadly duo at the 3rd and 4th spots in the order.  The original 1987 bash brothers Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco of the Oakland Athletics do not compare to the two Nicks on the Ragers, as they continue to tear the cover off the ball.  In the 5 games they played, they have a combined 8 homeruns and 20 RBIs.  The long ball for the Ragers is just the tip of the iceberg.  The defensive play by 3rd baseman Felicia Hans and 1st baseman + shortstop Mark Paiotti has been off the charts.  Felicia has a deadly arm to go with her glove, and Mark has been a one man highlight reel with his acrobatic catch in foul territory to his diving catches at shortstop.

Is Greg Fuchs human?

Psych Ward improved to 4 and 0 after Monday’s game, but the team’s main story is what Greg Fuchs is doing offensively and defensively.  Greg went 2 for 4 with 2 homeruns and 7 RBIs.  He leads the league in RBIs with 16, and is tied with Rob Lennon and Nick Virginio in the homerun lead with 5.  On top of his unrealistic numbers, Greg plays shortstop, but looks as if he is in multiple positions.  No matter where the ball is hit in the field, Greg is there to make the play.

Kaitlyn Foley smashed game ending 2 run homerun

Upon entering the Coed competitive summer season, ABL made the decision to change the softball for female batters.  Kaitlyn Foley of the Schreib Tribe has become the first female batter to hit the ball over the fence as she helped her team to victory.  ABL tips their cap to you.

Winter is Coming, as Northern Souldiers never forget

Last summer Green Rock defeated Northern Souldiers (team was Biggie’s at the time) in impressive fashion.  A year later the Northern Souldiers have not forgotten the bitter loss and got their revenge as they defeated Green Rock 9 to 5.  There was no holding back as the team played with the highest intensity.  Team captain Mike Mitchel and Baraka Stubbs worked their magic on the defensive side as Andrea R. and Andrea Gonzalez provided the offense.  The Andreas hit the warning track on a few occasions putting the fear in their opponent’s eyes.

Mariachi Diaz

McSwiggans Pub’s Maribel Diaz was getting a standing ovation on Monday night for her dominant gameplay.  Maribel made two grabs on 2nd base that made her really stand out.  The first one was an inning saver as she got her team out of a jam catching a line drive ball up the middle when bases were loaded. Her 2nd highlight was a diving grab off a hard hit ground ball and making the throw while on the ground to 1st base to get the runner out.

Matt Westia is Legend

Through out the coed softball seasons, players always dream about hitting the ball over the centerfield scoreboard or hitting one at the apartment buildings in center or right field.  Most players’ dreams are Ryan the Little Legend’s batter Matt Westia’s reality.  Matt makes his appearance every summer season and does not disappoint at the plate.  On command he has crushed the ball over the scoreboard, into the street in centerfield, and last Monday night he hit the right field apartment building with a 3 run blast.  His face is on the Mama Johnson Mount Rushmore of Power.
