McSwiggans Pub and Angry Leprechauns going to Championship

Monday, November 4, 2013—the first round wrapped up for the co-ed softball playoffs at Mama Johnson Field in Hoboken, NJ.  The temperatures on the field felt subzero, but McSwiggans Pub and Angry Leprechauns kept warm from their scorching bats.  Both teams put up double digits, combining for 36 total runs while holding their opponents to single digits. The two teams entered the playoffs as the number 1 seeds, and both of them played like champions.

George Brett Division

McSwiggans Pub out muscled the Pourhouse Sliders 19 to 9 beating them at their own game, the long ball. McSwiggans Pub hit 4 homeruns with Josh Elmore leading the way with 2 homeruns.  Bob Szuhany followed Josh’s lead with by hitting a grand slam in the 6th inning and Dan Clark finished with a solo shot in the 7th inning.

When the 2013 Summer League Champions weren’t hitting the ball over the fence, Corey Brown and Allie Twarowski were capitalizing on any offensive opportunity.  Corey finished the night going 2 for 4 with 3 runs, 2B, BB, and 5 RBIs and teammate Allie ended her night going 3 for 4, 3 runs, 2 BB.

Pourshouse Slider Sean Pardue gave McSwiggans’ defense a hard time because he refused to keep the ball in play. He had a huge night offensively hitting 1.000, with 2 homeruns and knocking in 5 of the 9 runs scored.

Every time the Pub looked like they were in trouble, their defense bailed them out.  Two game changing double plays happened in the 5th and 6th innings.  A hard hit ball was hit to pitcher Randy Williams and somehow he managed to get a glove on it to start the double play with shortstop Dan Clark.  Also, in the 6th inning outfielder Corey Brown perfectly positioned himself on a shallow hit ball to make a great unassisted double play throwing the runner out at first. McSwiggans Pub will go on to face their deadly rivals, Louise & Jerry's in the Championship Round.

Carlton Fisk Division

The Angry Leprechauns demonstrated on Monday night winning the division wasn’t an accident by defeating the Thunder Bunnies 14 to 5. Angry Lep Bryan Giannecchini and Lexi Pisciotto did a fantastic job offensively.  Lexi had 2 RBIs and finished the game going 2 for 3 and Bryan was a nightmare for defenses with his 4 hits on the game.

The Thunder Bunnies had a big 1st and 6th inning because Brian Alfson made teams cringe getting up at bat. Brian knocked in all of the runs with his 2 monster home runs on the night.

The other 7 innings the Leprechauns knew how to protect their pot o’ gold. They really tightened up their defense especially in the 7th inning when 2nd baseman Lauren Arensberg and shortstop Jon Polonitza did what looked to be a routine double play.

With one more week left, it’s the final hand.  All or nothing,  Who is all in? Angry Leps vs. Insects for the Title.
