Both Louise & Jerry’s and Slingers Advance

SUNDAY, AUGUST 19 -- HOBOKEN, NJ—the playoffs for the Coed softball Summer League kicked off Sunday night at Mama Johnson Field.  Two games were featured in Sunday night’s match up.

Game 1 featured the first round in the Robinson Cano Division.  The #2 seed Louise & Jerry’s defeated the #3 seed Dumbledore's Army 9 to 5.

Louise & Jerry (defending champions in spring league) jumped out in front with a 3 run 1st inning, but really pulled away with a 5 run 3rd inning thanks to the bats of Angel Romano (4 for 4, 2 2B, 2 3B, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Kristine Cheeka (3 for 4, 2 runs, 1 RBI), and Jude Bracken (2 for 3, 2B, HR, 1 run, 2 RBI).

Dumbledore’s Army put some hits together in the top of the 7th inning, scoring 3 runs to make the game 9 to 5, but fell short due to some spectacular plays that were made in the field.  L & J’s shortstop Mike Lombardo made a great diving catch on a ball hit hard and got the runner out at 2nd base.  Also centerfielder Angel Romano hit the fence when robbing Dumbledore’s Andrew Harnischfeger’s potential bases clearing hit.

Louise & Jerry's advanced to the Championship Game, to be played on Monday Night vs. their nemesis, McSwiggans.

In second game of the night, a first round matchup in the Chris Davis Division, the #2 seed Slingers defeated the #3 seed Biggie's 19 to 5.

Biggie’s held the red hot Slingers’ offense to only two runs heading into the bottom of the 5th inning.  Biggie’s shortstop Melissa Settie made great play after great play for Biggie’s especially in the bottom of the 3rd inning when she made a great diving catch off a hard hit ball from Jesse Daunno. Also, Biggie outfielder James Morton made a great throw to 3rd base  to get Amy Wilcock out and to keep Biggie’s in the lead 5 to 2.

The Slingers’ offense wasn’t just red hot in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings, but it was on FIRE.  In the 3 innings combined, they put up 17 runs.  James Amadeo (3 for 4, 3 2B, 3 runs, BB, 4 RBI), Jesse Daunno (3 for 4, HR, 2 runs, 6 RBI) and Jason Orr ( 3 for 5, HR, 3 runs, 4 RBI) were major contributors to the 3 inning rally.

The Slingers will take on Mission 50 for the Chris Davis Championship
. Game-time is Monday at 7pm.
