Wolfpack snaps Scrappy SZN’s win streak in double overtime thriller.

Jersey City – This potential playoff matchup was certainly entertaining, as Wolfpack took on the flaming hot Scrappy SZN. Both teams played amazing defense, but Wolfpack struggled a bit on offense early on. Scrappy SZN started the game on a 6-0 run with the game play being fast-paced, physical, and energetic. Wolfpack started to move the ball better to find the best shot and did a great job against Vic Rosario on the boards. The rest of the half was close in score with multiple lead changes but, because of the defense, the game was low-scoring. Wolfpack led at the half 23-21 behind Tait Pirkle’s 6 points. Vic Rosario led Scrappy SZN with 10 points.

The second half is where things got exciting. The pace of the game was still up and the score was still neck and neck. Wolfpack then took the largest lead by any team of 8-points.  Once their two big-men took a rest, however, Scrappy SZN went on an 8-0 run. Now halfway through the second with the score tied, Wolfpack went ice cold from the field for over 7 minutes and made some costly mistakes. They would battle back and Scrappy SZN held just a 2-point lead with 2 minutes remaining.  Tait Pirkle then hit a clutch 3-pointer. With 25 seconds left the game is tied.  Antonio Burnett II could not put this one on ice in regulation, and we were off to overtime with the two teams tied at 44.

What’s better than one overtime? Let's try two. After an uneventful first overtime period, the score was now 46-46 heading into a second. Defense was a mainstay for both teams. Fastforward to the end of the period, and Wolfpack’s Dave Smith was sent to the free throw line looking to tie the score.  He missed his second attempt, but there with the put-back layup was Anthony Lawrence.  Wolfpack would go on to win the game by a score of 54-52. Before tonight Scrappy SZN had won 8 in a row, but Wolfpack put that streak to bed. They were led by Dave Smith’s double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds, also adding 2 assists and 1 block.  Teammate Tait Pirkle’s 14 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 steal also played a huge role. For Scrappy SZN, Vic Rosario was the only player with double digit scoring at 23 points, tacking on 8 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist, and 1 block.
