No Ryan, No Problem

Despite missing their QB, No Fat Chix turns a rough start into a big W.

Coming off of an impressive 42-0 victory last week, No Fat Chix took on opponent Birds of Prey in what they knew would be a tough game.  Birds of Prey were coming off of their own big win by a score of 38-0.  On top of that, No Fat Chix was without their starting QB and the reigning league MVP Ryan Sheridan.

No Fat Chix did themselves no favors to start this one off.  As if the obstacles listed above weren’t enough, they would lose two errant snaps into the endzone for safeties on their first two possessions.  The first followed with a successful defensive stand, but the second was capped off by a Peter Jahera to Joe Janela touchdown, bringing the deficit to 10-0.

Things looked to turn around a bit as new quarterback Ray Sheridan settled in and hit Tim Sheridan for a deep touchdown.  The lead was cut to 10-7 after a successful conversion.  No Fat Chix continued with the solid defense, and gave themselves a prime opportunity towards the end of the half.  Getting the ball back after halftime, No Fat Chix played the end of the first aggressively.  Ray Sheridan had what looked like an easy touchdown as time expired, but the pass would be dropped and hit the turf for an incomplete.

Still trailing out of the half, No Fat Chix had another crack at the lead.  However, this time, it was a strong defensive effort from Birds of Pray that would force the 3 and out.  No Fat Chix knew they would need to rely on the defense to pull this one out, and they did just that.  The second half saw Corey Hutchinson secure his second interception of the game.  Ray Sheridan also notched his second sack of the game.  On offense, Tim Sheridan broke through again for his second score on another strike from Ray.  No Fat Chix took their first lead of the game by a score of 13-10 and would never look back.

Birds of Prey still had plenty of time left, but Jack Cauley would come through in the clutch to close out the game for No Fat Chix.  Ray Sheridan launched one deep and dropped a dime to Cauley who hauled in the incredible one-handed catch.  After another successful conversion, the score jumped to 20-10.  On what would be the final drive, Cauley sealed the victory with a 4th down sack of the opposing quarterback.

It’s never easy to play without your MVP caliber quarterback (just ask the Green Bay Packers).  It may not have been the prettiest of games, but No Fat Chix scrapped it together and pulled off the important win.  This was their only meeting of the regular season with Birds of Prey.  It is still very early, but, as of now, both of these teams are square in the playoff picture.  If they do meet again, it would need to be in the playoffs, where both of these teams will look very different.  No Fat Chix would return their quarterback and Birds of Prey would have their full complement of players, including those moonlighting in our basketball league.  This may be something to look forward to.
