JERSEY CITY, NJ -- Opening night for the 2017-2018 ABL Men’s Basketball season started with a bang as Chubb and Mad Hatters faced off.
Mad Hatters had control of the game, as they dominated the first half scoring 29 points. The Hatters played great defense, only allowing their opponent to score 15 points. Leading scorers at the half for Mad Hatters were Ramone Webster with 6 points and Michael Cabrera with 10 points. For Chubb, Drew Leatherman and Jon Dempsey led the team with 4 points each.
By the looks of it, Mad Hatters may have gotten too comfortable with their lead and Chubb took advantage, erasing their 14-point deficit and shocking Mad Hatters by forcing the first overtime game of the season, tying the score 44-44.
Mad Hatters notable defense wasn’t enough to keep Chubb from stealing this game with a final score of 47-45. The Mad Hatters' Webster finished the game with 12 points, 3 assists, 2 steals and 7 rebounds and Cabrera had 14 points, 2 steals and 3 rebounds. However, Chubb gets a lot of credit for their team effort in pulling off this win. Dempsey may have only had 6 points, but he picked up 3 assists, 2 steals and 9 rebounds. Also contributing were Skylar Lash (7 points and 10 rebounds) and Ali Salameh (9 points, 2 steals and 5 rebounds), but the player of the game was Team Captain Leatherman. He had an impressive all-around effort, recording a double-double of 11 points, 14 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.
