Who were the top teams in 2016?

JERSEY CITY/HOBOKEN -- New Year's Eve is a mere 15 days away - and so is the ABL's Dec. 31st Winter Basketball League Registration Deadline for teams looking to play rec and competitive ball in the Jersey City/Hoboken area.

So how did your squad fare in 2016? It's time to review the seasons past and make our picks for the Best Hoops Teams of 2016.

# 5 THE ALLIGATORS

The Gators played in two seasons, compiling an overall record of 14-5. This past fall, they lost the championship game to the juggernaut UC Slaughterhouse. Back in the spring, they went undefeated in the regular season (8-0), then won their 1st playoff game vs. Dale's Revenge, but lost the Championship to W & J's. Their two championship appearances are good enough to put them in the ABL top 5.

Standouts: JT Wilson (18 ppg), Alex Bialy (17 ppg), Mike Lennon (11 ppg and 5 apg), Bill Leonard (12 ppg), Travis Farrell (12 ppg), Evan Card (9 rpg)

# 4 W & J's

W & J's came out of nowhere, a newcomer to the league, winning 8 of their 9 games played in the spring season and avenging their 1 regular season loss vs. the Alligators by defeating them in the Championship game by a score of 54-39. This was W & J's 1st ABL Championship, and that's good enough to earn them # 4 on our list.

Standouts: Justin Grant (16 ppg), Kevin Kirk (13 ppg, 6 rpg)

# 3 The Wolfpack

The Wolfpack, familiar faces in the ABL Hoops League, added to their Championship rings by claiming their Winter Division Title. They finished the year with an overall 13-6 record, and in the Winter, they took down Charliewang in round 1 of the playoffs, and then defeated the Cobras in the championship, 56-35.

Standouts: David Wiggins (17 ppg), Josh Heyer (11.7 ppg), David Lee (11.4 ppg), Scott Somset (10.4 ppg), Jarell Mason (9 rpg).

# 2 Anytime Bail Bonds Ballers

The Anytime Bail Bonds Ballers, formerly knows as D2, were ferocious on the boards and relentless on the court. They've won the big game in the past, and this Winter was no different. They did suffer a lone defeat in the regular season to the talented UC Slaughterhouse, but finished strong, winning 10 games, including the Championship in a 62-42 victory over the Monstars.

Standouts: Corey Stokes (20 ppg, 10 rpg), Robert Cheeks (18 ppg, 10 rpg), Mach Sononbria (15 ppg)

# 1 UC Slaughterhouse

The # 1 team in the ABL this past year was the UC Slaughterhouse. They had an overall 19-1 record, their only defeat coming at the hands of the Monstars in the Winter Season playoffs. But like all great teams, the UC rebounded in the Fall Season, going an undefeated 10-0 and defeating the Alligators in the Championship 71-53.

Standouts: Kevin Walker (35 ppg), Jonathan Agurto (24 ppg), Vic Verdiza (18 ppg), Joel Matos (12 rpg), Jason Matos (11 rpg)
