NUTLEY, NJ -- The Men's Summer League playoffs have begun! Despite 93 degrees, Arsenal & Angels in the Outfield came to play the best out of 3 Series in Nutley on Sunday.
This one looked to be a slugfest with both teams scoring runs in the 1st inning. Angels in the Outfield was lead by Luis & Luigi Gomez, who combined to go 6 for 8 with 3 runs scored. Nick Rizzolo, batting 7th, had a 2 RBI double that gave the team some life in the bottom of the 5th.
Pitcher Mike Perry struggled, giving up 6 runs in the 1st and 12 overall (11 earned). He did manage to strike out 2 of the Arsenal's batters.
But the Arsenal offense was too much, scoring 12 runs in Game 1 and securing the victory. Alex Aitkens bombed a 3 RUN Homer in the 1st to set the tone. More importantly, the Arsenal batters were patient, & Joey Molesky looked more comfortable compared to 2 weeks ago in Clifton. He went a solid 3 for 3 w/ 1 RBI. Eric Mills the pitcher had a nice day on the mound but had a tough time at the plate (going 0 for 3 with 2 K's).
Game 2 should have been played in Italy considering the amount of "walking" that was displayed. The Arsenal had a combined 9 batters walk throughout the game, and of course took advantage. They scored runs in every inning including 5 in the 1st & 6 in the 3rd. Jimmy Cardinalli batting cleanup was a hammer, driving in 5 RBIs with Chris Collins right after him in the lineup driving in 4. Everyone on Arsenal score at least 1 run except Jared Fowler, chin up big guy, you had a nice 2 RBI triple!
Since the Angels pitching struggled, it was too little too late for them to come back. Scoring 11 runs is a solid game, but not in the playoffs. You need to be better, more focused & ready to play your heart. The Angels just looked deflated, possibly hungover from the Game 1 loss! Honorable mention to Stanley Rodriguez (3 for 4), Luigi 4 RBIS, Billy Fitz 3 RBIS & lead off man Kedwin Parra, 3 for 5.
Until next season Angels! The Arsenal (15-5) and their 5-game winning streak are off to the Championship vs. a deadly opponent - Wee Wee Willies (15-5).
