ABL Sluggers Rock the Neighborhood

HOBOKEN, July 27 - The first annual ABL Homerun Derby was set into motion Monday Night prior to the All-Star Game, and the event was mayhem for players and on-lookers alike.

ABL sluggers were creating a hail storm in July as clinchers rained down on buildings, playgrounds and on-lookers in a destructive all out war of the power hitters that caused collateral damage for blocks.

Pete Kennelly and Angel Romano

Pool A was dominated in the first round by Angel Romano who blasted four bombs to take first in the pool with Pete Kennelly coming in second with three bombs of his own.

Pool B was won by Mike Fikaris with four homers, but Rob Lennon and Ryan Arcadia ended up tying with three in the first round, which would bring on a tie-breaker that neither player wanted to lose.

In the first tie-breaker Arcadia smacked another three bombs in his effort, but Lennon with one homerun and just two swings left went back to back and tied it up for yet another round to break the tie.

Lennon then lead the party with two homers with the first round of swings, and Arcadia struck right back as he tied Lennon with his final swing.

In the final go around Lennon, who was surely tuckered out manage to get one over the fence, but Arcadia was just out of gas, and despite a grand effort could not match the one homerun mark, so Lennon would go onto the semi-finals, where he would be matched up against pool A winner Angel Romano.

The first semi-final pitted Pete Kennelly vs Mike Fikaris. Pete slugged first and was hitting towering shots to deep left field off of the Housing Authority building and finished the round with three bombs.

Pete looked on as his friend Mike Fikaris attempted to match his total, but came up just short with only two long balls advancing Pete to the final round.

The second semi-final matched Angel Romano against Rob Lennon. Lennon had just come off of a grueling round against Ryan Arcadia, but, as he has done time and time again in the regular season and in this contest he continued to drill clinchers.

Lennon started off 0-4, but rallied with three quick homers before being set down, setting the mark at three for Angel Romano.

Romano seemed to have lost his stroke with the first four swings, but he then turned it into high gear as four of his last six swings were major bombs, most of which were to the deepest part of the park in dead center field.

The finals were set. Pete Kennelly against Angel Romano and both guys were set and ready to rock. Kennelly was absolutely on point in the final round. In his first six swings he crushed five bombs way high into the air in left field, and set himself up with a sweet insurance policy for his final swings. Though he did not manage any more than five, which stood as the high number on the night in terms of homers per round.

Angel was due up and despite some mighty hacks could not match Pete's amazing final effort in this glorious battle of the beasts. Kennelly would go on to be crowned champion of the sluggers.

The derby was an event to remember as our players smashed and crashed clinchers all over the neighborhood as spectators from the block roared and cheered these giants on as they hammered softballs high into the night sky.
